CACAOFOREST - Study for the launch of the Cacao Forest agroforestry project in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana

Main goals
Following lessons learned in the Dominican Republic since 2019, the project aims to design, test, improve and develop, in partnership with local stakeholders, new sustainable agricultural systems for cocoa cultivation based on the principles of agroforestry and the valorization of various productions. This study aims to identify the modalities of this initiative in Côte d'Ivoire and Ghana.
Specific objectives
OS1. Une synthèse des principaux enjeux de durabilité de la filière cacao avec un focus spécifique sur la place de la question de l’agroforesterie.
OS2. Un état des lieux des principales actions menées et soutenues par d'autres acteurs autour des questions de durabilité de la filière cacao.
OS3. Un état des lieux précis des actions menées par les partenaires du projet avec les coopératives, institutions/organisations locales.
OS4. L’identification des axes/chantiers principaux du futur projet.
OS5. Une étude des opportunités de Fund Raising pour le déploiement d'un projet Cacao Forest Afrique à moyen terme.
SO1. A summary of the main sustainability issues of the cocoa sector with a specific focus on the place of the question of agroforestry.
SO2. An inventory of the main actions carried out and supported by other actors around sustainability issues in the cocoa sector.
SO3. A precise inventory of the actions carried out by the project partners with cooperatives, local institutions/organizations.
SO4. Identification of the main axes/projects of the future project.
SO5. A study of Fund Raising opportunities for the deployment of a Cacao Forest Africa project in the medium term.

Rolande Kouassi Ettien
A botanist by training, Rolande holds a Master 2 in Plant Systematics, Ecology and Biodiversity. She joined the Nitidae team in 2018 and mainly brings her expertise in the areas of agroforestry (SAF cocoa trees, floristic inventories, ecosystem services, etc.), organic agriculture and fair trade (cocoa certification reference EOS, FFL label, documentary review and audit). After holding the position of Agro-Botanist within the Mé REDD+ Project, she is now in charge of coordinating the activities carried out by Nitidæ within the Cocoa4Future and Terri4Sol projects.

PhD in environmental and development economics (ENS Cachan, University of Versailles St Quentin-en-Yvelines), he is expert in conservation finance, including through ecotourism and innovative financial mechanisms (PES), and he specialised in international cooperation programs. He worked several years in Namibia, Morocco, and Kenya. In 2012, he joined Iddri (SciencesPo Paris) as senior researcher in biodiversity economics, before joining WWF France in 2017, as a manager for public sector partnerships. At Nitidae since September 2021, Renaud was PRM2 Project Manager from 2021 to March 2024
