DURACOL - Sustainability of agroforestry farming practices in cocoa production systems in Côte d'Ivoire
Main goals
Carry out a detailed agrarian diagnosis in a cocoa-growing region in the South-East of Côte d'Ivoire known in particular for the existence of agroforestry systems characteristic of the old cocoa loop, in order to characterize the sustainability of the agricultural practices encountered. Particular attention will be paid to agroforestry and the link between the different cocoa production systems and deforestation
Specific objectives
SO1. Analyze the proper functioning of the different cocoa production systems existing in Ivory Coast, including cocoa farms conducted in agroforestry, based on information collection work in the field
SO2. Propose a series of indicators making it possible to compare these different systems and in particular to characterize their sustainability, in order to contribute to scientific work relating to the definition of sustainable agricultural systems
Beneficiaries
Actors of the cocoa sector in Côte d'Ivoire
Results
R1. Complete description of the cropping systems practiced in the study area
R2. Produce a typology of farming systems in the study area that is related to the central questioning of the study
R3. Analysis of the operation of the production systems for each of the types identified above
R4. Analysis of current development dynamics
Activities
A1. Define a methodology to characterize and compare the sustainability of the agricultural practices of the different production systems identified within the chosen study area
A2. Organization of a fieldwork coordination mission in the selected study area with the research supervisor associated with the study
A3. Carry out a diagnostic analysis of the agrarian system in a cocoa region of Côte d'Ivoire in which there are agricultural production systems related to agroforestry
A4. Synthesis of the information collected during the diagnostic analysis carried out in the study area with the aim of describing and characterizing the trends in terms of sustainability (social, environmental and economic) of Ivorian cocoa production systems
