GABOKOUME - Support to the organization of producers of Moabi oil and Okoumé resin and their insertion into sustainable and equitable sectors

Main goals
Forest covering 85% of Gabonese territory, NTFPs are a source of food products, pharmaceuticals, fishing equipment, construction and combustion materials but also income for rural forest populations. Following market studies, some NTFPs have been identified as particularly interesting, especially for their cosmetic applications. The objective is therefore to develop income-generating activities for local communities and preserve Gabon's natural resources.
Specific objectives
- Support the organization of sustainable sectors of non-timber forest products
- Promote the social and environmental sustainability of the sectors
- Structuring of production: capacity building on Good Practices and support for the organization of producers
- Definition of criteria for the sustainability of value chains: Convention on Biodiversity, principles of Fair Trade, UEBT (Union for Ethical BioTrade) standards
- Nagoya Protocol: consultation of local communities, rights of access to genetic resources, traditional know-how, geographical indications
Beneficiaries
Three communities of people living in the forests, about one hundred producers and thirty villages in three regions of Gabon: around the Waka National Park, around the Iboundji Mountain and in the Bouroubou area.
Results
R1. Relevant indicators are selected and associated with the development strategy
R2. An organizational development strategy is defined, associating the beneficiaries with the definition of the strategy
R3. Formal organizations are accompanied in the definition of Orientation and Action Plan validated by the members
R4. A quality and traceability program is set up within each accompanied OPA
R5. The economic management capacities of FOs are strengthened
