World Agroforestry Week opens Monday, May 22 in Montpellier!
Strengthening the links between science, society and public policy is the objective of the 4th World Agroforestry Congress to be held for the first time in Europe, and more specifically in Montpellier from May 20 to 22, 2019. Open to both researchers and students as well as farmers, NGOs and political and economic decision-makers, this congress awaits some 1,200 participants from more than 100 countries.
On this occasion, Cédric Rabany, co-director of Nitidæ, will give a presentation on Wednesday, May 22, presentation on the Payment for Environmental Service model developed with the company Alter Eco in Côte d'Ivoire around the valuation of a organic cocoa and agroforestry. In parallel with the congress, several events organized for the general public. Through the voice of Benjamin Garnier, one of our cocoa experts based in Côte d'Ivoire, Nitidæ will participate in one of them, namely an evening projection debate presented below.
Agroforestry, which involves combining trees in crops and pastures, is now recognized for protecting soil, responding to the challenges of climate change and contributing to global food security. So this practice may well be the future of farming. The fields of application are very diverse: hedges and alignment of trees or shrubs in and around plots, multi-level agriculture, production of timber or fruit in crops, fodder and honey trees, trees of '' shade for perennial crops (coffee, cocoa, vine) or livestock, multi-layer agroforests and agroforestry gardens.
An International Agroforestry Union will be created at the end of the congress to bring together innovations in agroforestry worldwide.
