Internship - Development of a hydrological model to evaluate the effects of development on water
In Fianarantsoa, Madagascar - Evaluate ex-ante the impact of land-use change on water resources through a hydrological model
Project context and issues
Nitidæ works in the region of Haute Matsiatra in Madagascar as part of the Kolorano project (see below) funded by Greater Lyon and in partnership with the NGO Agrisud International. As part of this project, several small watersheds are subject to agricultural development and tree planting to increase the infiltration of water. However, these exotic tree plantations will also have an impact on the removal of water for transpiration. Thus, the project wants to evaluate * ex-ante * what will be the balance of these plantations on the water resource by studying the infiltration / transpiration ratio thanks to a hydrological model.
Tasks to be performed are as follows
- State of the art models that can be used to meet the objective of the internship
- Bibliography on water requirements and impacts on water resources of planted species
- Use of the identified model under different land cover scenarios and analysis of the results
- Recommendations in terms of plantations vis-à-vis water resources and biodiversity
Any proposal for analysis or complementary method will be welcome.
