ANAKELY - Project to establish an "Organic-Fairtrade" micro-plantations in Madagascar
Main goals
In the course of developing the production and commercialisation of “organic Fair Trade” green beans, the companies Lecofruit (France - Madagascar) and Pro Sain (France), asked Etc Terra to implement a micro-plantations programme for their farmers in the highlands of Madagascar
Specific objectives
On this sparsely wooded land, reforestation activities will benefit the local communities, while also meeting the growing demand for wood, fruits and other non-timber products in the nearby capital of Antananarivo
Results
R1. Increased household income through the sale of timber forest products (wood) and non-timber products (fruit, etc.); By selling fruits and wood, each household could expect to receive a cumulative amount of 8.9 million Ariary over 15 years, equivalent to an average of 16 €/month in a country where the minimum wage is 35 €/month
R2. Reduced time spent on looking for firewood
R3. Level of land tenure of reforested parcels
R4. CO2 sequestration expected over the next 15 years at 1416 tons for 6200 trees planted during these two years of planting. This is the equivalent of 400 airline flights between Paris and Antananarivo
R5. Increase of local biodiversity
Activities
Since 2013, 124 farmers have benefited from the following activities:
A1. Participatory theoretical training on the benefits of agroforestry
A2. Distribution of leaflets containing technical recommendations from the picket to the plantation
A3. Practical training on technical set-up of the plantation: making the picket line, drilling the hole, filling the hole, planting and protecting against cattle
A4. Planting 50 trees per farmer (on average 32 fruit trees and 18 forest trees). 6200 trees have been successfully planted during these two campaigns. This creates a basis for a reforestation program that could affect 2000 producers and lead to the planting of 170000 trees by the end of 2017
