Côte d’Ivoire

Fields

Sectors

Timber Cocoa Coffee Cola Hevea Palm oil Cassava Plantain

Main goals

57% of the forests of Ivory Coast disappeared between 1990 and 2015 (BNETD, 2016). Only 3.4 million ha of forest remain and this decline is largely attributable to cocoa cultivation of which Côte d'Ivoire is the world's largest producer.

To address this situation, the objective of the REDD + Project (PRM) is to reduce greenhouse gas emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in the Mé region while improving living conditions of the populations bordering these forests.

Specific objectives

Laying the foundation for a green economy by actively participating in current processes of decentralization and securing land rights
Preserving, renewing and adding value to regional agricultural and forestry capital by demonstrating that it is possible to reconcile the reduction of pressure on natural resources and rural development, with cocoa farming leading the way
Measure the impacts of the project and support the national REDD + process, particularly in terms of mobilizing the necessary funding for scaling up and deploying a jurisdictional approach

Beneficiaries

The forests of Mabi-Yaya and the climate!
The 7 intervention villages
2250 farmers and 5000 ha of agricultural plantations
150 forest and reforestation owners
15 charcoal burners
4 NGOs and 4 local entrepreneurs

Activities

Spatial Planning
Land-use mapping at the regional scale through remote sensing (report below, in french)
Participatory elaboration of Local Development Plans and implementation through local call for projects (schools, health centers, etc.)

Land tenure security
Official delimitation of 7 village territories
Issuance of land certificates on 3500 ha of wooded areas (including agroforestry systems)

Agriculture zero deforestation
Technical assistance modulated with 2250 households: increase of the added value per hectare, incomes securing and diversification, support to sustainable value chains (organic and fairtrade certifications), development of Payments for Environmental Services dedicated to organic cocoa agroforestry in partnership with Alter Eco

Sustainable forest management and reforestation
Reforestation of 500 ha (including 50 ha of wood energy) in partnership with the private sector (Inprobois, Tropical Bois, Tranchivoire, FIP) and local NGOs (APFNP, GIREFOR, AYA, GAYA)
Technical and financial support to first clearings for 150 owners with unmanaged old reforestations

Sustainable domestic energy
Regional diagnosis of the bio-energies sector Improved carbonization training for 15 charcoal producers
Technical and financial support to local NGOs and entrepreneurs: biogas, improved fish smokers, high-efficiency charcoal kilns, biocharcoal

Impact measurement and support to the REDD + process
Establishment of a Regional Reference Emission Level (report below, in french)
Establishment of a Socio-Economic and Environmental Reference State (report below, in french)
PhD dedicated to the early detection of land clearing and monitoring over time of land-use change, in partnership with CURAT
