6th edition of the Chocolate Scoreboard!

How did companies perform in the 6th edition?

Every year, we invite chocolatiers, traders, processors, manufacturers and distributors to join us in reporting on progress in seven social and environmental areas essential to a sustainable sector. This initiative allows the sector to reflect on what constitutes ‘good’ sustainable development.

The questions have been specially designed to enable companies to monitor their own progress. The Chocolate Scorecard is a tool that enables consumers to choose better chocolate.

The Chocolate Scorecard has evolved in 2024 in line with the progress (or lack thereof) of companies. This year Tony's Chocolonely receives the ‘Good Egg’ award and companies such as Halba and Groupe CÉMOI also stand out among the ‘best students’ of sustainable chocolate.

But what is the Chocolate Scorecard?

It is a collective of organisations recognised for their expertise in the cocoa sector, including Nitidae, which specialises in ‘climate and deforestation’ and ‘agroforestry’. It is also a useful rating and monitoring tool for the efforts of distributors, both small and large companies.

This tool also contributes to greater transparency among companies in the sector: 82% of companies now share data on child labour, compared with only 45% in 2023.

While high and unstable cocoa prices benefit producers in contrasting ways, and can amplify the risk of deforestation, data transparency and the involvement of companies are essential to produce (truly) sustainable cocoa.

Nitidae is involved in cocoa in many ways: structuring sustainable sectors, strengthening traceability, and supporting the agroforestry transition of cocoa landscapes. We carry out this work both in the context of projects such as PRM2 in Côte d'Ivoire and Natura Sud-Est in Cameroon, and also in the context of technical assistance or studies for private companies such as VALRHONA and Lindt & Sprüngli.
